Geonics Em-38 Conductivity meter

The Geonics EM-38 is a small portable conductivity meter designed for shallow applications such as archaeology, agricultural, or near surface contamination studies.

The 38 shown below is seen being used with a handle assembly which incorporates a marker switch which is used to transfer data into a data logger at the required position. The data logger in turn stores data, which is later transferred to a PC for contouring or profiling.

A recent application has been the use of EM in Agricultural studies, where ground conditions have been surveyed to identify areas requiring varying degrees of nitrates/ferterlizers. In this case the RT (real time) systems would be used allowing data to be uploaded to a laptop where GPS data is also stored, providing the user with a accurate map op conductivity variations.

The EM-38DD, above right, is in fact 2 EM-38 instruments attached at right angles allowing in-phase quadrature reading to be taken simultaneously. This allows for greater productivity.
